Product Announcement Details
Product Overview
Using Xinuos OpenServer 6 version 1.0.0 for VMware as a base, Xinuos has built an optimized Virtual Appliance for VMware. This Virtual Appliance uses a subset of existing and updated device drivers that provide optimal performance in a virtual environment. The implementation of OpenServer 6V as a Virtual Appliance means that you can easily have a Virtual Machine imported and configured within an hour.
With OpenServer 6V, customers will be able to capitalize on the benefits of virtualization, which is one of the fastest growing and most popular trends in the IT industry today. Virtualization allows multiple operating systems to run side-by-side as peers on the same hardware server. This provides a hardware cost savings and efficiency for IT departments. With OpenServer 6V, customers can take advantage of the full range of modern hardware support provided by the VMware virtualization layer while continuing to run their current applications.
For customers, virtualization essentially lets one computer do the job of multiple computers by sharing the resources of a single computer across multiple environments. Virtual servers and virtual desktops let customers host multiple operating systems and multiple applications both locally and in remote locations, freeing them from physical and geographical limitations. The result is that in addition to energy savings and lower capital expenditures due to more efficient use of hardware resources, customers obtain high availability of resources, better desktop management, increased security, and improved disaster recovery processes.

Features in OpenServer 6V
OpenServer 6V is the first release of OpenServer 6 optimized to run in a Virtual Machine environment.
What follows is a list of the major features of OpenServer 6V Version 1.0.0.
OpenServer 6V ships with a package of Virtualization Extensions that facilitate the delivery of the product as a Virtual Appliance. This package provides support for:
- Configuration of the Virtual Appliance on first boot after import
- Reconfiguration of the Virtual Appliance at any time
- Reconfiguration after cloning of your OpenServer 6V virtual machine to allow multiple versions to run in parallel. (Note that clones require separate licenses)
VMware Tools
OpenServer 6V ships with the April 2011 release of the Open Virtual Machines Tools (open-vm-tools) package. This package adds tools to improve integration between OpenServer 6V and the host VMware system.
This first release of OpenServer 6V does not include an Upgrade Supplement for converting an OpenServer 6 VM into an OpenServer 6V VM. Customers who wish to do such a conversion should contact their local sales representative to discuss whether a Professional Services arrangement will work for them. An Upgrade Supplement is planned for a future version of OpenServer 6V
OpenServer 6V System Requirements
OpenServer 6V may be installed on VMware vSphere 4.x, vSphere 5, ESXi 4.x, ESXi 5, and ESX 4.x. The underlying hardware needed to support an installation will vary depending on the applications and installation options chosen. Customers should check with VMware for hardware requirements related to running Guest Operating Systems on the VMware platform. Computer Servers and other physical hardware compatible with VMware releases can be found in the
VMware Compatibility Guide.
